Neither is universally superior. Square tube provides flat mounting faces and easy joint location, suiting guards, brackets and modular equipment. Round tube has the same bending response in every lateral direction, behaves naturally in torsion and is comfortable to grip, suiting rails, handles and multidirectional loading. Select by section properties, joints and fabrication—not appearance.

COMPARE WITH DATA
Bending stiffness is EI and, for the same material, the critical term is second moment I; bending stress is approximately σ=Mc/I. Torsion depends on torsion constant J, not the same I. Compare sections at a fixed envelope, wall, mass or cost condition, and use actual certified dimensions. ASTM A500/A500M-23 is relevant to cold-formed structural tubing, but product corner radii, weld seam and tolerances still require verification.
SELECTION MATRIX
- Drilling faces, mounting rails or attaching panels: square/rectangular tube often saves labor. - Variable load direction or bent profiles: round tube is often preferable. - Full-penetration or fatigue-loaded corners: compare joint details, not only parent section. - Cleanability: a round exterior helps, but closed ends and drainage still need design. - Production cost: quote cutting, drilling, bending, fixturing and welding—not price per metre alone.
