Self-clinching nuts suit repeatable sheet assemblies with two-side press access and qualified sheet hardness/thickness. Rivet nuts suit blind installation or retrofit. Weld nuts can carry high load and temperature but add spatter, distortion and masking issues. Select from product-specific data, not thread diameter alone.

FOUR REQUIRED CHECKS
1. Minimum sheet thickness/hardness: clinching relies on cold flow; sheet that is too hard or thin will not lock or will bulge. Do not add tack welds to rescue a wrong clinch selection. 2. Hole: punched/laser diameter, burr direction and edge distance must follow the data sheet. Oversize reduces push-out/torque-out; undersize can crack. 3. Loads: evaluate push-out, torque-out and thread pull-out separately; do not treat laboratory typical values as design allowables. 4. Installation: press clinch hardware squarely, never hammer it; control rivet-nut stroke/force and grip range; validate projection-weld parameters and orientation poka-yoke.
THREAD ENGAGEMENT START
For ordinary steel internal threads, begin evaluation near one nominal diameter of effective engagement; softer aluminum may start near 1.5D. Actual need depends on bolt class, parent-material shear strength and load. For repeated service, favor replaceable steel inserts and specify maximum installation torque.
