An executable weld callout tells fabrication and inspection the joint type, arrow/other side, size, length/pitch, all-around or field weld, contour/finish, quantity and governing standard. “Fully weld,” “weld securely” or coloring a 3D edge does not create consistent acceptance.
Values in this article support engineering screening during design review, RFQ and prototyping. They do not replace formal calculations, material data sheets, qualified procedures or contractual standards.
CHOOSE ONE SYMBOL SYSTEM
ISO 2553:2019 and AWS A2.4 conventions are not identical in every detail, especially arrow-side representation. State the chosen system in the title block and use it consistently. ISO 2553 remains current while revision work may be ongoing; lock the contractual edition. For fillets, identify z (leg) or a (effective throat); for equal 45° legs a≈0.707z, so they are not interchangeable.
DEFINE QUALITY AND INSPECTION
The symbol defines what to make; the quality specification defines permitted imperfections. ISO 5817:2023 levels B/C/D may be selected with extra limits for critical imperfections; B is most stringent but does not prove structural safety. Visual testing can follow ISO 17637:2016. Pressure, lifting, vehicle or structural work also needs the applicable design/fabrication code, qualified WPS/PQR and welder qualification.
